Almost Lost to Time

By the early 20th century, the Caspian pony was thought to be extinct. It wasn’t until 1965 that an American-born equestrian named Louise Firouz, living in Iran, rediscovered the breed. While traveling through the remote Alborz Mountains near the Caspian Sea, she encountered small, refined ponies that closely resembled the ancient depictions. Recognizing their significance, she dedicated her life to their preservation.

Characteristics of the Caspian Pony

  • Size: Typically 10 to 12 hands high, making them a small horse rather than a true pony.

  • Build: Slim and elegant, with fine bones, a short head, large expressive eyes, and a refined neck.

  • Temperament: Intelligent, kind, and eager to please, making them ideal for children and equestrian sports.

  • Strength: Despite their size, Caspians are incredibly strong and capable of carrying significant loads or excelling in competitive events like show jumping and driving.

Ancient Origins

The Caspian pony's roots trace back to ancient Persia (modern-day Iran), where they were highly valued by nobility. Archaeological evidence suggests that small horse-like animals, similar to today’s Caspian ponies, were depicted in art and used in ceremonies as far back as 1000 BCE. These ponies were likely used as chariot horses and mounts for Persian kings and warriors due to their agility, endurance, and elegant stature.
